We've been in the business for 76 years, get about 2,000 calls for help and provide over 20,000 nights of accommodation to ex-Servicemen and women every year. We don't make a huge fuss about what we do. We just make sure every veteran who comes to see us has a bed that evening for however long it takes to sort out his problems. There are only 6 of us up here at our 'relief centre' near Victoria Station in London. None of us goes to bed until the last of our veterans has a bed and food that night – quite an incentive to get on with the job! These men – some of them pretty young, actually - drop in daily and we do everything we can to help them: train or coach tickets to get them to the right place - usually London where we can see and chat with them; B&B accommodation to get them off the street for a night or two before a vacancy occurs in our hostel; money for food and clothing so they regain their physical - and mental - strength and confidence; and longer term accommodation in private rented or council flats, plus training for employment and, later, a job. They are then back on their own two feet. Most of us working in Veterans Aid are ex-Servicemen - 'Veteran helping Veteran'. We have a few non veterans who work at our 'relief centre' or hostel but only because they are people who really understand the homelessness sector, the bureaucracy that surrounds it and who can help filling in all the complex housing benefit forms etc.; i.e not something which most of us, and much less our veterans who are depressed, are much good at. Veterans Aid, recognised as the ‘accident & emergency’ of the military charities, deploys its considerable skills and limited resources to fulfil a front-line role. Every penny we are given by the public – mostly by people who have an in-depth knowledge of what we do - goes towards helping our homeless veterans get their lives together again.
